Chung Fu-do
Fort Collins, CO - Daniel Wilkewitz, 4th Degree Black Belt
Greetings all from Fort Collins! Wow this year we seem to have been jammed packed with events and news. Let's see if we can do a quick yet informative recap of what's going on in Chung Fu Do.

Our school is rapidly expanding in numbers as we have a total of a little over 20 students who dive into the art with us. The greatest bonus to our numbers is our diversity in rank as we seem to have just about every rank through brown covered. Our new students are great additions and have provided us with a renewed sense of discovery in the art. Oh the joy! So many rank advancements, so little time. Our biggest promotion this year went out to Chuck Fussman , who is now formally known as Sempai Fussman, who has rightfully achieved the rank of Shodan-Ho.

Going down the ranks recently we've gained a new Nikyu as Dawn Hedges shed a brown belt stripe and Shahbaaz Shah survived the chute and entered the brown belt ranks this past September. Congratulations to our advance ranking students! On to our intermediate students we witnessed an interesting test as Kevin Pollock and Chad Anonson tested for Gokyu at the same time Jordana Briggs and Tim Potter tested for Yonkyu. Fortunately this four way test ended in success as each person achieved their next rank. We look forward to Tim's march towards the chute in months to come. Melanie Stark and Montana Waters also achieved the Gokyu rank. Not to forget our orange belts Monica Shah, Ryan Pappert, and Chrissy Westlund. Good luck to Monica and Ryan as they head towards green!

Our good friend Liz Cooley is off to seek new adventures in the great state of New York. Liz made a brave march towards Sankyu and endured the chute this past summer. We wish you all the best of luck on your future endeavors. We miss you greatly.

This past year has been great in our activities around the dojo. We once again had our annual Six Flags Elitch Gardens Trip, made a trip to the Denver Museum, and are currently in the works for our spring soccer match. We were also fortunate and honored to make a visit to Master Duesenbery's new dojo at the Judo Center. What a great place! A last good luck goes out to all of those students who are making the bold steps to their next rank and a special good luck goes out to our friend Mr. Wally Van Sickle as he looks forward to his next test.

Shahbaaz Shah, Sankyu

Dragon Warrior Dojo
Effingham, IL - Art and David Shuler, 1st Degree Black Belts
The Dragon Warrior Dojo began its first classes last summer. We are offering both credit and non credit courses in karate through Lake Land College. This is our local junior college. The summer classes were an exciting start. We had 19 students enrolled and 17 that remained pretty active until the semester break. Unfortunately, none of them returned after the month long break, so we have been busy trying to attract new students or reactivate those since. The college has recently given us permission to continue classes through the breaks. This should help us improve our retention in the future. We are also offering a women's self defense class.

This semester started with eight karate students signing up. Three of them have remained active. Two of those Will Richars and Justice Steele have completed our self-defense program and are working on their next steps toward Yellow belts.

We want to thank Master Landers, Sensei Larison, and Sandan Beccue for all the help they have given us in getting this program up and going. We also want to thank Grandmaster Rose. He has been very helpful responding to our requests for materials and information. The Program directors manual has provided us a lot of good information also.

Rose School of Karate
Portsmouth, NH - White Cobra Senior Grandmaster Peter Rose, 8th Degree Black Belt
I am pleased to announce the promotion of 3 students of the Rose School of Karate to Pending Black Belt after an 8 and a half hour exam on Sunday Jan 12th.
  • Rick Downs
  • James Mason
  • Scott Williams
Rick and Scott studied with me for a couple of years back in the early 80's and needed a little break. They have been back about 5 years now. Jim has been with me on and off due to school, family, jobs, etc since 1984. It was an excellent exam. I behaved myself - or so I think as I didn't hurt anybody, and a hopefully enriching experience was had by all.

Assisting me was Nidan James Nancarrow, who started the Northwood School of Self Defense in January of this year. And my thanks to Sandan Russ Jones of the Sachem School of Self Defense, Laconia, NH and Sandan Tim House of the Tai Chien Dojo, Portsmouth, NH who offered their time to come and support those testing.

Congratulations to Nidan James Nancarrow on the opening of his new program, Northwood School of Self Defense, Northwood, NH. After working in retail sales and management at Radio Shack for 27 years, Nidan decided to change careers and is now a department manager with the Demoulis food store chain. This gives him more time and a more structured schedule. He is looking forward to this opportunity to have a small club of his own. He has been training with us for over 20 years. Congratulations Nidan!

World Tai Chi Day Seminar at The Sachem School

On Saturday, April 12th, World Tai Chi Day, Master Henry Oliveras conducted a seminar at The Sachem School in Laconia, N.H..

The seminar was divided into three parts: Silk Reeling; Push Hands (Chi Sau); and applications. The premise of the seminar was to instruct the students in the basics of Silk Reeling, apply those concepts to Push Hands and practical applications.

Weather forced the Silk Reeling portion of the seminar inside the Sachem School. However, after a most excellent Brazillian Salad lunch, the clouds cleared and the Push Hands/applications sections of the seminar were done under blue skies in the park. An excellent ending to an excellent day!

I would like to express my gratitude to Grandmaster Rose, Grandmaster Dusenbery and Sandan Tim House for their support of this seminar. This exemplifies the strength of our association.

Sandan Jones

Somersworth School of Self Defense
Somersworth, NH - Bruce Vinciguerra, 4th Degree Black Belt
Reporter: Ikkyu Marty Richter

The Somersworth School of Self Defense has had a very busy fall/winter season. We are pleased to announce several promotions. Demonstrating that hard work and consistent attendance is critical to success, Michael Dower was promoted to Orange belt in January. That same evening, also showing grim determination, Luke Smith and Chris Grover performed very well during a difficult test. They were both promoted to Purple belt. It won't be long before they are both wearing Brown Belts!!! Finally, we would like to congratulate our Sensei, Bruce Vinciguerra, on his promotion to Yondan during Grandmaster Dusenbery 's Disciple Retreat last fall.

Early last fall we were honored by a visit from fellow Tiger line student, Shodan-Ho Chuck Fussman. This reporter met Shodan-ho Fussman at the Advanced Retreat last year, which was hosted by the Tiger Line, and it was a real treat to have him visit our dojo back East. This past February, eleven of our students went on an exciting field trip to the Berkley Performing Arts Center in Boston. We attended a show called "The Wheel of Life". For the unacquainted, the show is a theatrical presentation on the history of the Shaolin Temple and features the Martial skills of the Shaolin Monks. It was truly a fascinating show and left the entire audience in awe. After the show, we all went out to dinner at "The Kowloon" for some delicious Chinese food. It was a particularly festive night as the restaurant was celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Lastly, we would like to celebrate an important milestone for our Sensei and Sempai, Yondan Bruce Vinciguerra and Nidan Larry Holman. While it may only seem like yesterday for them, it was really 20 years ago that the two of them started their martial arts career at the Rose School of Karate. Our school is fortunate to have such a dedicated team and we wish them continued success and growth in our Art.

As you can see, it has been an active winter for us. We have a group of students who are really motivated and we look forward to some new promotion announcements over the coming months!!

Storm Dragon Dojos/Landers
Effingham, IL - Dragon Senior Master David R. Landers, 6th Degree Black Belt
Spring again! Even though the new year starts in the middle of Winter, it seems as though we really start to look at, and plan for, the new year when nature starts its renewal. As I talk to my people and folks from the other legs of the Association, it seems as though everyone is busy planning new classes and new projects. This is refreshing. We need to harness the inherent enthusiasm of the season to energize our commitments to what we will accomplish this year. Certainly last year was a good one. Ties among the various schools were strengthened, and new friendships formed. Grand Master Rose's hard work on getting us specific data on the nature of our Association as it now is comprised will serve as a guide to what we do well and what we can do better. We are a small, highly organized and motivated, association of martial arts students and instructors with emphasis on quality instruction. We are small enough to be able to offer individual attention to student needs, but large enough to draw from various areas of expertise. With firm commitment to core principles that bind us together, we are nonetheless able to quickly adapt and adopt new techniques and ideas and offer them to our collected schools. This approach is exceedingly rare. To have binding, shared core material, and still be able to almost turn on a dime when it comes to giving our students the best and most up to date curriculum, is really the best of all possible worlds. And, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the pioneering work Grand Master Dusenbery and his people are doing in curriculum development. When completed it will represent a level of definition in goals, curriculum, rank structure and standards that simply exist no where else. Exciting times. Have a great season and enjoy yourselves, from all of us in the Dragon line.

Tai Chien Dojo
Portsmouth, NH - Tim House, 3rd Degree Black Belt
Tai Chien Dojo is currently a ronin program. We have been searching for a permanent place to study our Art. This past Winter we were at Phillips Exeter Academy as Marty Richter's guest, we spent a month at Sensei's house, and we are currently residing at Rose School of Karate dojo, until late Spring. Our thanks goes out to Grandmaster Rose and Marty Richter.

The students are working very very hard on their material. And by the time this reaches all of you folks we should have a Yellow Belt. Also, my Purple Belt, Stacy Miller, has rejoined, after being out for five years, and she is excited about catching up on new material.
